DESCRIPTION
The SQUALL Hardshell Jacket taiga green is the highest-performing classic rain hardshell in the current Helikon-Tex range. It is designed for situations where weather protection is not just a backup stored in a backpack, but must function actively for extended periods: sustained rain, strong wind, exposed tours, and intense movement. At its heart is the TorrentStretch® 3L laminate with a 30,000 mm water column and 30,000 g/m²/24 h breathability. Helikon-Tex combines the membrane with taped seams, YKK® AquaGuard® zippers, underarm ventilation, and a DWR finish. The taiga green version remains visually understated and pairs well with muted outdoor, hunting, work, and EDC clothing. This makes the Squall the right choice if you want to make as few compromises as possible in rain protection and are willing to accept slightly more material, features, and price compared to an emergency rain jacket.
What is the SQUALL Hardshell Jacket taiga green suitable for?
The Squall is aimed at users who remain out and about for several hours even in bad weather: hiking and trekking, hunting, demanding outdoor work, extended travel, winter tours using a layering system, or changeable days in the mountains. The high-positioned chest pockets remain accessible even with a fastened backpack hip belt. At the same time, excess heat can be vented via underarm ventilation. In summer, it acts as a standalone outer rain and wind shell; in winter, the necessary warmth is built up underneath using base layers and midlayers.
- for long-lasting rain and strong wind
- for hiking, trekking, hunting, and demanding outdoor work
- for backpacking trips thanks to high-positioned pockets
- as an all-year-round outer shell of a layering system
- for users who prioritize maximum weather protection reserves over minimal pack size
TorrentStretch® 3L, 30K/30K and RET 7 explained
3L stands for three-layer laminate: outer fabric, waterproof/breathable membrane, and a protective inner fabric are permanently bonded into a single unit. This protects the membrane better against abrasion than a lighter 2.5-layer construction and is particularly suitable for regular, intensive use. The disadvantage is usually slightly more weight and volume.
The water column describes the pressure a material can withstand in a laboratory test before water penetrates. 10,000 mm, 20,000 mm, and 30,000 mm are therefore not indicators of rainfall volume, but comparative values for waterproofness. Breathability in g/m²/24 h indicates how much water vapor can be transported through the material under defined test conditions. Higher values can help during movement, but do not replace active ventilation and do not completely prevent sweating. Temperature, humidity, backpack, activity, and the layers underneath significantly influence the actual climate inside the jacket.
For the Squall, Helikon-Tex currently specifies a 30,000 mm water column and 30,000 g/m²/24 h breathability. Additionally, an RET value of 7 is stated. RET describes the resistance to water vapor transport; unlike the g/m²/24 h figure, the rule here is: the lower, the better. RET 7 thus represents very good vapor permeability. Nevertheless, mechanical underarm ventilation remains important during high exertion.
AquaGuard®, underarm ventilation, and backpack-compatible pockets
YKK® AquaGuard® zippers have a water-repellent laminated surface and reduce water penetration in the zipper areas. Together with the taped seams, this improves the overall seal. The main zipper is a two-way system and is additionally secured at the bottom with a Prym® snap button. The two chest pockets sit higher than classic hand pockets so that a fastened hip belt blocks them less. An inner pocket provides additional protection for a smartphone or documents. The hood, cuffs, and hem can be adjusted; the jacket can be packed into its hood for transport.
- TorrentStretch® 3L laminate with 100% nylon outer and PU membrane
- YKK® AquaGuard® zippers and taped seams
- Underarm ventilation for direct heat release
- 2 high-positioned chest pockets plus an inner pocket
- 2-point adjustable hood, adjustable cuffs and hem
- DWR outer treatment to prevent rapid soaking and dirt adhesion
Squall, Chinook or Levanter – what actually makes sense?
A hardshell is the outermost weather protection layer of a clothing system. Unlike fleece, it provides hardly any warmth of its own, and unlike a softshell, it prioritizes protection against sustained rain and wind. The decisive factors are not just high laboratory values, but the interplay of waterproof material, sealed seams, zippers, hood, ventilation, and the clothing worn underneath. For cold conditions, the hardshell is therefore combined with a base layer and a suitable warmth or insulation layer.
Selection note: The Squall is not automatically the best choice for every user just because it offers the highest lab values. For a small rain backup in a daypack, the Levanter at 268 g is significantly more practical. The Chinook, with 20K/20K, 2.5L construction, and 400 g, is a good middle ground for regular rain. The Squall is particularly worthwhile if you are frequently out for long periods, want a robust 3-layer construction, and need more performance reserves during heavy precipitation and physical activity. For very cold weather, the warmth continues to be provided by the layers underneath.
When layering, each layer has a clear task: a base layer wicks moisture away from the skin, a fleece or synthetic insulation jacket provides warmth, and the rain jacket protects the exterior against wind and precipitation. Especially for longer tours, it is sensible to choose a rain jacket large enough to accommodate a suitable warmth layer underneath without unnecessarily restricting mobility or moisture transport.
