DESCRIPTION
The Helikon-Tex MCDU Combat Shirt in Olive is designed for active use with a backpack, vest, or other load-bearing system. Unlike a classic field shirt, it features two very different material zones: a lightweight, moisture-wicking torso and more robust sleeves. This combination reduces bulk where additional equipment sits, without unnecessarily sacrificing strength in the forearms, shoulders, and elbows.
This item is the NyCo Ripstop version. This is important because Helikon-Tex offers the MCDU Combat Shirt in different fabric variants. While the cut and basic concept are similar, the material feel and mobility differ.
NyCo Ripstop version: robust material where it is needed
The sleeve and shoulder areas are made of NyCo Ripstop. Nylon increases abrasion and tear resistance, while cotton improves the fabric's feel and comfort during extended wear. The fabric is robust and more breathable than coated weather-protection materials.
TopCool® on the torso – less heat buildup under equipment
The torso area is made of lightweight TopCool® polyester. The fiber structure supports moisture transport from the skin to the outside, where moisture can evaporate more quickly. This is particularly relevant when the chest and back are covered by equipment, where a full Ripstop torso would be unnecessarily warm.
The MCDU does not replace a baselayer system for extreme temperatures. Its strength lies in the combination of a lighter torso and robust sleeve area in a single garment.
Two upper arm pockets and large Velcro panels
Both upper arms have zippered pockets for flat gear. Their position remains easily accessible even when the chest area is covered. Large Velcro panels allow for name strips, identification, or patches without adding extra pockets to the torso.
Stand-up collar, YKK® zipper, and adjustable cuffs
The short front zipper extends into the stand-up collar, allowing for quick adjustments to neck coverage and ventilation. Adjustable cuffs can be adapted to gloves and wrists. Articulated sleeves support natural movement, especially when reaching or bending the arms.
Reinforced elbows with room for inserts
The elbows are additionally reinforced and feature compartments for optional protective inserts. This is useful if you frequently work on the ground, kneel, lean for support, or put regular stress on the sleeves against rough surfaces.
Color and pattern: Olive
The Olive version does not change the cut, material composition, or features. The deciding factor is how well the color matches your existing gear and typical operational environment.
MCDU Combat Shirt or Raid Shirt?
The Helikon-Tex Raid Shirt uses robust stretch-ripstop on the torso as well, making it the better choice if you are looking for a standalone field top without additional equipment. The MCDU shows its advantages when the torso needs to remain as light and moisture-friendly as possible under backpack straps, a vest, or a load-bearing system.
MCDU or MBDU Shirt?
The Helikon-Tex MBDU Shirt is a full-featured field shirt made of NyCo Ripstop with VersaStretch® side panels and four pockets. It is more universal as a standalone shirt. The MCDU is more specialized and specifically focuses on the lightweight functional torso.
Technical specifications
- Sleeve/shoulder fabric: NyCo Ripstop, 50% nylon / 50% cotton
- Torso: 100% polyester with TopCool® technology
- Pockets: 2 upper arm pockets with zippers
- Collar: Stand-up collar with short YKK® zipper
- Elbows: reinforced, with compartments for optional inserts
- Sleeves: articulated and adjustable at the cuffs
Conclusion
The MCDU Combat Shirt is not a classic shirt, but a deliberately hybrid top. If you want less heat buildup on your torso under equipment, but need robust materials on your arms and shoulders, this is a very coherent concept. The key is to select the material variant that suits your own priorities.
